The word Geography has been derived from the Greek word “Geographia”, which consists of two words “Geo” and Graphia”. Geo means the Earth, and Graphia means to write. Collectively Geographia means “Earth Writing”, or Writing about the Earth. The word Geographia was first used by a Greek Philosopher “Eratosthene”, who lived from 274 BC to 194 BC. Geography is a systematic study of the Earth. Before the introduction of the scientific method, geographia was studied as a fundamental subject of philosophy. It became part of natural science with the introduction of the scientific method.

Definition of Geography

Geography includes the Earth’s physical features, weather patterns/climate, distribution of living organisms, and their dependence and influence over the physical features of the Earth. Geography encompasses the physical aspects of Earth (such as landforms, rivers, and climate), and human aspects (population, culture, and the spatial organization of societies). These are the aspects which helped us to divide the subject into two main branches; i.e. physical geography, and human geography. Physical geography describe the natural environment of the earth, while the human geography explain human relationship with the natural environment of this planet. The earth science experts utilize a variety of tools and methods, including maps, satellite imagery, and statistical analysis, to analyze and understand the spatial relationships and patterns that exist on Earth.
