« Back to Glossary Index

Lake seiches are seesaw-like waves on the surface of lake water, caused by wind or pressure changes pushing water to the end of a lake, which then sloshes back and forth as it tries to resettle, creating temporary water level changes that can expose lakebeds or cause flooding. They occur in any enclosed water body, from coffee cups to the Great Lakes, and are essentially oscillations of water that can last for hours.
