Stylolites are serrated, irregular surfaces within rock formations where mineral material has been dissolved away due to pressure. This process, known as pressure dissolution, leads to a decrease in the rock’s overall volume and results in the formation of distinctive, interlocked patterns. They are particularly common in limestones and other soluble rocks and are often marked by a concentration of insoluble residues like clays and oxides.
