Geodesy is the science of accurately measuring, and understanding the Earth’s geometric shape, orientatin in space, and gravity field, providing the fundamental framework for mapping, navigation (like GPS), and understanding Earth system changes. It uses both terrestrial surveys and space-based tools (like GPS) to establish precise coordinates, create consistent reference systems, and model the Earth’s complex, irregular shape (the geoid).
