The Triassic Period (approx. 252–201 million years ago) was the first period of the Mesozoic Era, bridging the massive Permian extinction and the Jurassic period. It saw the rise of the first dinosaurs, mammals, and marine reptiles, such as ichthyosaurs, on the supercontinent Pangea, characterized by hot, dry conditions and no polar ice.
