Peat is an accumulation of partially decayed organic matter, primarily sphagnum moss, formed over thousands of years in waterlogged, anaerobic (oxygen-deficient) wetland environments known as bogs or mires. It is widely used in horticulture for soil improvement and in, or as fuel, though its extraction releases significant carbon.
