Erosion is the geological process where natural forces—water, wind, ice, and gravity—wear away, transport, and deposit soil, rock, and dissolved materials on Earth’s surface. Distinct from weathering, which only breaks down material in place, erosion moves these materials to new locations, reshaping landscapes, causing landslides, and degrading soil.
