« Back to Glossary Index

Spheroidal weathering is a form of chemical weathering that rounds jointed bedrock, such as basalt or granite, by attacking corners and edges faster than faces. Water penetrates fracture networks, forming concentric layers (like an onion) as minerals alter, expand, and peel away. This creates rounded corestones found in the subsurface.
