« Back to Glossary Index

Seafloor spreading is a geological process occurring at mid-ocean ridges, where tectonic plates diverge and magma rises from the mantle to create new oceanic crust. This conveyor-belt mechanism pushes older crust away from the ridge, driving continental drift and widening ocean basins. It is key evidence for plate tectonics, supported by magnetic reversals and seafloor age mapping.
