« Back to Glossary Index

Plate tectonics is the scientific theory that Earth’s outer shell (lithosphere) is divided into several large, rigid plates that glide over the mantle’s ductile asthenosphere. Driven by heat-driven mantle convection and slab pull, these plates move roughly 1–6 inches annually, causing earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountain building.
