« Back to Glossary Index

Palaeomagnetism is the study of the Earth’s ancient magnetic field preserved in rocks, sediment, or archaeological materials. By analyzing the alignment of magnetic minerals (like magnetite) formed in the past, scientists reconstruct tectonic plate movements, seafloor spreading, and past geomagnetic reversals. It is a key tool in dating geological, archaeological, and environmental data.
