« Back to Glossary Index

Alluvial deposits are unconsolidated sedimentssilt, sand, clay, and gravel—transported and deposited by rivers and streams. Found in floodplains, deltas, and alluvial fans, these materials form highly fertile soils and often contain valuable mineral deposits like gold and tin. They are sorted by water flow, with heavier sediments settling upstream and lighter particles traveling to lower-energy environments.
