An avalanche is a rapid, immediate flow of snow, ice, or rock sliding down a mountainside. Primarily driven by gravity, they most frequently occur on slopes between 30 and 45 degrees. When an avalanche stops, the snow sets and solidifies like concrete, making self-rescue extremely difficult.
