The C-horizon, often referred to as the parent material or substratum, is a distinct layer in the soil profile found beneath the topsoil (A horizon) and subsoil (B horizon). It is characterized by being made up of weathered, partially broken-down rock or mineral material, with little to no organic matter accumulation or soil structure development.
